Torrents of Dread III

Spoiler Alert!
This entry details parts of the adventure Torrents of Dread by Greg A. Vaughan, published in Dungeon Magazine #114. Don't read it if you wish to play that module some day!

Both Cassie and Ulfgar had begun to feel the effects of the humid and damp conditions they'd been adventuring through, both coming down with the Shakes, a rather nasty tropical disease. Sir Blake used his cure disease on both of them and Karena used lesser restoration to restore what they'd lost through the initial symptoms.

With the storm showing no signs of letting up, they descended into the mostly deserted underground tunnels, eventually ending up in the corridor of fissures. Cassie used gaseous form to allow Lukas to scout ahead - something that proved useful, but also dangerous as a huge Flesh Golem charged the gaseous Lukas an inflicted a fair amount of damage on him. He escaped, and everyone then was turned gaseous and went into the golem's tunnel. It was a hard battle, but eventually the golem fell. Another exit to the surface was found, but the location of the Necromancer was still unknown.

A more concerted search was made. Eventually, they discovered the secret way to the lower levels, and dealt somewhat effectively with the bullywug witch that was waiting for them. Finally, they reached the lair of the Necromancer!

The battle was somewhat anticlimactic, although he did manage to fatigue all of them with a spell - a few well placed fireballs quickly took him out of the action. However, the storm had not abated!

Another secret door was found, and the party descended into a sea cave... and discovered a horrific sight: dozens of headless bodies of native villages, dumped in the cave. From a tunnel on the other side of the cave could be heard chanting...

Four eel-creatures were concluding their dark ritual at that moment, the party having taken too long to reach them. As Sir Blake fell victim to the dominate ability of the monsters, an Aspect of Demogorgon was summoned from the Abyss and moved to destroy the party.

Many fireballs were thrown into the chamber, Blake and the eel-creatures taking damage from them. Eventually, Blake was the only one left standing in the chamber. Lukas retreated down the corridor, leaving Ulfgar the only one facing the Aspect - but, with more magic and a great deal of axework, the Aspect eventually fell and the isle was saved - for the moment.

The mystical plate that the eel-creatures had been using in their summoning had been melted by the multiple fireballs, but the party consoled themselves with a chest full of gold, silver in copper that was in the sea cave. Finally, they'd be able to repair their ship and set sail for home...
