This report was posted by Zaruthustran on the WotC boards, one of the playtesters of the D&D Miniatures game. He's kindly allowed me to repost it here. Note that the rules are not quite in their final state, which explains some inconsistencies in play from the released version of the game.

Just for fun, I thought I'd post a couple quick battle reports that I sent in during playtesting. Not sure if the point values on these armies are legal according to the final rules.

I thought the Undead + Mindflayer army was pretty good, since I assumed that the undead could "stick" enemy troops in melee while the Mindflayer could safely Mind Blast the entire group.

Anyway, here are the reports:

Battle 1

Mike F (won):

  • Vadania (Druid)
  • Nebin (Gnome)
  • Dire Boar
  • Wolf
  • Thri-kreen Ranger
  • Elf Skirmisher
  • Gnome Recruit

    Mike W:

  • Sword of Heironeous
  • 2 Dwarf Axe Fighters
  • Half-Orc Monk
  • Sun Soul Initiate
  • 4 Men-at-arms

    Terrain:

2 walls, 2 statues, sacred circle, difficult terrain. Walls cut off middle of field. Statues on either side. Sacred Circle and Difficult Terrain on Mike W's side of the board (did not come into play).

    Summary:

    First few turns:

Mike F stayed put and cast Blurs on Boar and Thri-kreen, Magic Fangs on Boar and Wolf, and Cat's Grace and Magic Weapon on elf skirmisher. Mike W cast bless and magic weapon, and advanced behind cover.Acid Arrow and Produce Flame wounded the high-HP dwarves.

    Middle turns:
Monks ran up and got killed by boar, archer, and gnome recruit. Dwarves and humans came 1 turn later. Color Spray stunned some of the men-at-arms. Boar routed and killed dwarf. Thri-kreen flanked other dwarf, but dwarf hit and routed it (rallied later). Blur prevented two hits on boar. Druid cast Flame Blade and started killing Men-at-arms. Men-at-arms killed Gnome Recruit.

    End turns:
Archer finished the rest of Men-at-arms. Boar killed dwarf, then Druid and boar flanked and killed Paladin.

    Battle 2

    Mike F vs. Brodie

    Mike F (won)

  • Mind Flayer
  • Wraith
  • 3 Goblin Sneaks
  • 6 Skeletons

    Brodie

  • Drow Cleric
  • Drow archer
  • Werewolf
  • Thri-kreen ranger
  • 2 Gnolls

    Terrain:
Blood rock, difficult terrain, sacred circle, 2 statues. Sacred Circle near Brodie's start point. Mike F blocked most of the view from the Circle with a Wall. Blood circle on Mike F's side in middle of board. Difficult terrain between Brodie's start point and middle of board. Statues to the side of Circle. Other statues out of play.

    Summary

    First few turns:
Brodie won init. Drow archer moved to Sacred Circle and shot at Wraith. Rolled a 20, but didn't beat Incorporeal. Werewolf moved forward. Mike F's sneaks advanced up along side of board. Brodie's other models moved toward center, except for Drow cleric, which moved up and cast Magic Weapon on archer. Wraith led the way and double moved into blood rock area. Other models followed. Worg charged and damaged wraith. Wraith struck back and caused a Con drain. Werewolf headed toward sneaks. Skeletons moved up and engaged worg. Archer shot and destroyed one skeleton. Gnolls advanced.

    Middle turns:
Two sneaks ran away from werewolf (and toward main battle). Other sneak stuck it out and hoped for a 20. He didn't ever hurt the werewolf, but the werewolf had bad rolls and was occupied for 3 turns. Sneaks made it to main battle and started flanking gnolls and worg. Drow Archer consistently popped one skeleton per turn. Mind Flayer moved up and Mind Blasted the melee (catching Wraith and Skeletons in blast) but only affected 1 enemy model on each of two tries. (We thought that Undead were immune to Mind Blast, but on Monday a closer reading of the rules showed that in D&D Miniatures, Undead are *not* immune to Stunning.) The Worg and both Gnolls made their morale saves, and had to be brought down by melee attacks.

    End turns:
Cleric moved up and tried to angle for a Slashing Darkness on mind flayer. Werewolf joined the fight and popped one of the last skeletons, but was flanked and wounded by Sneaks (but made it's Morale save). Wraith and Mind Flayer flanked cleric. Cleric tried to Inflict Wounds on wraith but it made the save (according to D&D Miniature rules, undead are susceptible to Inflict spells). Mind Flayer hit with both attacks and Rent the cleric. It was late, so we called the game in favor of the Flayer and his band.
